What is a business plan?

A business plan is a written document that explains what your business does, who it serves, how it makes money, and where it is headed. It turns a rough idea into a clear, structured story that other people, and you, can follow.

A good plan does double duty: it is the document investors and lenders ask for, and it is the roadmap you use to make decisions and measure progress.

Why you need one

Even if you never show it to an investor, writing the plan forces you to think through the parts of your business that are easy to skip.

• Raising money: banks and investors expect a plan before they will talk numbers.
• Clarity: it surfaces gaps in your idea before they cost you money.
• Alignment: it gets co-founders, partners and early hires on the same page.
• Focus: it gives you targets to track instead of guessing.

What to include

Most plans follow the same handful of sections. You do not need all of them on day one, but lenders and investors will look for these:

• Executive summary: a one-page overview of the whole plan.
• Company description: what you do and the problem you solve.
• Market analysis: your customers, demand and competitors.
• Products and services: what you sell and why it is better.
• Marketing and sales: how you reach customers and grow.
• Operations: how the business runs day to day.
• Team: who is involved and why they can pull this off.
• Financial plan: forecasts, funding needs and assumptions.

How to write it

Start by answering the guided questions and fill in what you already know. Write in plain language, keep sections short, and resist the urge to pad. A focused ten-page plan beats a vague forty-page one.

Write the executive summary last, once the rest of the plan exists, so it actually summarizes what you decided.

Writing the executive summary

The executive summary is the most read and least carefully written part of most plans. Treat it as a standalone pitch: someone should grasp your business from this page alone.

• What the business does, in one or two sentences.
• The problem and your solution.
• Your market and the opportunity.
• Traction or progress so far.
• What you are asking for, such as funding or partners, and why.

Building the financials

The financial section scares people off, but at this stage it is mostly informed estimates. Show how money comes in, what it costs to operate, and when you expect to break even.

Include a sales forecast, a basic profit and loss, and your startup or funding needs. State your assumptions clearly so a reader can sanity-check the math.

Common mistakes to avoid

• Wildly optimistic forecasts with no assumptions behind them.
• Claiming you have no competitors, because you always do.
• A vague target customer instead of a specific one.
• Burying the ask, so no one knows what you want.
• A forty-page plan that no one will finish reading.

Tips for a stronger plan

Keep it living. A plan is most useful when you revisit it as the business changes, not when it sits in a drawer.

• Tailor the language to your reader, since an investor and a bank want different things.
• Use real numbers wherever you have them.
• Get one outside person to read it before you send it.
• Update it each quarter as you learn.
